What Is a Monk?
A monk is a man who chooses a life centered on prayer, community, and stability. At Glastonbury Abbey, that life is shaped by the Rule of Saint Benedict — a wisdom tradition that teaches balance, humility, and attentiveness to God’s presence.
The monk’s day is ordered around the Liturgy of the Hours, the Eucharist, lectio divina, study, work, and fraternity. He takes vows of stability, obedience, and conversion of life — promising to remain in one community and to grow continually in charity and faithfulness.
Monastic life is not an escape from the world. It is a way of learning to meet the world with clarity, compassion, and a grounded heart.

Lectio Divina
Sacred reading
Lectio divina is the quiet, daily practice of lingering primarily with Scripture — reading slowly, listening attentively, and allowing God’s word to take root in the heart.
Alongside communal prayer, it anchors the monks in an ongoing conversation with God that continues throughout the day.
See how the rhythm of prayer and community shapes the day — and consider whether this rhythm resonates within you.
