Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults

Glastonbury Abbey is committed to being a place of safety, hospitality, and care for all—especially for children and vulnerable adults. Our safeguarding policy guides how we protect those entrusted to us and how we uphold a culture of respect and accountability.

Our Commitment

The Abbey has maintained an official protection policy since the 1980s and entered a formal partnership with Praesidium, Inc. in 2002. We have been fully accredited by Praesidium since 2004 and participate in ongoing monitoring and review. This collaboration strengthens our efforts toward transparency, prevention, and responsible oversight.

How We Uphold Safety

Our safeguarding practices follow Praesidium Accreditation Standards, which review our work across three areas:

  • Prevention: Screening of new members; education and formation for monks, staff, and volunteers; support and accountability systems; and transparent processes for reporting and addressing potential boundary concerns.
  • Response: Procedures for responding to reports of suspected abuse and the role and use of external review boards
  • Supervision: Oversight and safety planning for any member with a known history of abuse, ensuring appropriate management and supervision.

Policy Summary

  • Every person has the right to be safe, respected, and protected from harm.
  • All monks, staff, and volunteers participate in regular safeguarding training.
  • We maintain established standards for one-on-one contact, meetings, and supervision.
  • Concerns are received with care and addressed promptly and professionally.
  • Our procedures are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect best practices.
